"The Rise & Fall of the New York City Transit Card" - Here’s my response to the MTA’s just-announced decision to retire the MetroCard at the end of the year (the idiots). It started with what we can call the “Blue Card” then reached its apotheosis with the current golden much-loved MetroCard… then plummeted downhill with its replacement, the decidedly unlovely OMNY card. I’ve recreated all three, using MetroCards (of course). My suggestion: how about the MTA sponsoring a dozen artists each year to submit designs for an OMNY card – make it bright, unusual, unexpected, always reinventing itself (just like New York City!).
