Short Story” – Mother took Junior and Lucy to see the strings of flags that had appeared overnight. Mother liked the way they fluttered in the sunshine. They reminded Junior of ones he’d seen in a picture book about ships. It was Lucy - although still too young to have learned how to read - who figured out the semaphore’s message. “Run!” she said, and in such a low, serious, and unaccustomed tone that neither Mother nor Junior stopped to question why. Run they did, and so escaped in the nick of time.
