Bas-relief MetroCard Collage, 9H x 6.25”

"RIP Nokia" – About twenty years ago, my friend Slavica left New York, returning to Bosnia & Herzegovina. No one wanted her Nokia phone which was already pretty antiquated (pre-flip even!) – except for me. After a steep learning curve, I mastered the Nokia – not that there was a lot to learn: it can’t take, send or receive photos or videos or get on-line. Texting is a challenge, with three letters per key. It was a sturdy little brick though: getting dropped never made a dent. And its battery lasted weeks without a recharge. Starting a few years ago, however, T-Mobile kept sending me dire warnings that my trusty Nokia would soon become obsolete: the world was going 5G and my phone could barely deal with 1G. I ignored them, of course, and the little Nokia kept on working… until the other week. No bars. Its days of long, faithful service have ended – so here’s a MetroCard portrait of it to remember it by. RIP, little Nokia!
